TRIO Purpose
The purpose of the TRIO program at the Leech Lake Tribal College is to increase recruitment, retention, graduation and transfer rates. Students in TRIO Student Support Services are twice as likely to remain in college as those students from similar backgrounds who do not participate in the program.

What is TRIO?
The TRIO program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. It is one of a series of programs to help overcome class, social, and cultural barriers that hinder many students from succeeding in higher education. TRIO programs are designed to offer educational opportunities for low income, first generation, and/or physically/mentally disabled Americans.

Whom does TRIO serve?
Under guidelines set by Congress, two-thirds of the students that are served come from families with incomes under $24,000, with neither parent having a four-year college degree. The other one-third of the program could serve students who do not meet the criteria. Anyone who is a U.S. citizen can apply.

What can TRIO do for you?
TRIO provides the opportunity to work one-on-one with each student. With our program only serving one hundred sixty students, our staff will get to know each student on a first name basis.

  • TRIO counselors help you set and achieve academic goals
  • One-on-one, or group tutoring is available to students
  • Personal, academic and career counseling
